MONCTON JOINS SPORTACCORD CONVENTION THIS YEAR!

16.05.2012

Atlantic Canada's 'Hub City' partners with SportAccord Convention for the first time! Moncton, New Brunswick will join 1500 sports representatives from around the world this spring, in Quebec City.

"The City of Moncton is delighted to take part in SportAccord Convention, the world's leading sport tourism convention," said Moncton Mayor, George LeBlanc. "Moncton has successfully hosted several national and international events, and we are thrilled to participate in this renowned event to further establish our city as a premier event-hosting destination."

Moncton's drawing power for major events extends far beyond the scenic South-Eastern New Brunswick region. Known as Atlantic Canada's 'Hub City', Moncton's convenient location at the heart of the Maritimes provides accessibility like no other for neighbouring provinces, New England states and beyond!

SportAccord Convention offers an exceptional opportunity for Moncton to promote its attributes as an event-hosting centre. The city's central location, world-class infrastructure, 'can-do' attitude and open-for-business approach, all naturally position Moncton as a prime sporting event destination.

Moncton has recently been selected as one of six Canadian cities to host the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015(TM)! This event - the world's largest single sports event for women - will be the first single sport event in Canada to be held from coast to coast.

As a precursor to this event, on May 30th, Moncton will hold the FIFA International Women's Friendly Match, Canada vs. China! This exciting match will give audiences a taste of international soccer, and get things in motion for the upcoming international event.

In 2010, Moncton welcomed 1400 athletes from 170 countries to its brand new state-of-the-art stadium during the IAAF World Junior Championships. This event sparked an exciting fan fever and newfound interest in large international sporting competitions, as the stadium filled to near capacity throughout the competitions.

Moncton also boasts such famed events as the first-ever regular season CFL game to hit Atlantic Canada in 2010, and a second CFL game the following year. Moncton has also successfully hosted the 2009 World Men's Curling Championships, the 2011 Olympic Hall of Fame Ceremony, and numerous national competitions in varying sporting disciplines in the recent past.

In addition to its outstanding track record in sporting events, Moncton has held large-scale outdoor concerts at the Magnetic Hill Concert Site, Atlantic Canada's largest outdoor concert venue. Legendary rock stars Rolling Stones, AC/DC and U2 have drawn audiences upwards of 85,000 people in recent years, and Moncton is preparing to welcome Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band to The Hill this summer.

"Thanks to the support and enthusiasm for sports in Moncton and the committed involvement of community partners, our success as a sporting event destination continues to grow," said Mayor George LeBlanc. "The City of Moncton looks forward to developing successful partnerships and further expanding its sporting event portfolio thanks to the SportAccord Convention."
