LEGAL AND CITY EXPERTS CONNECT THE DOTS AT LAWACCORD GIVING GUIDANCE ON CONTRACT RISKS & BUSINESS IMPLICATIONS FOR HOSTING KEY SPORT EVENTS

Date:
Tuesday, February 27, 2018

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Delegates attending this year’s LawAccord conference will hear from leading experts on the legal risks and business implications for hosting major global sports events.

LawAccord will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 April during SportAccord at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre and is particularly suited to GAISF International Federation members and registered delegates from cities, legal teams, and sports stakeholders.

The opening session will examine how rights are awarded to host major events and will recommend the legal steps to undertake for contract negotiation.

Delegates will hear from Catherine Ordway, Senior Fellow, University of Melbourne who will discuss how inter-agency collaboration is increasingly needed to be organised by bidding cities to support traditional sports integrity efforts.

A special joint panel session will follow with CityAccord on the most important commercial considerations when preparing to bid for an international event to void disputes and conflict, supported by case histories. Legal and city panel experts include:

·         Craig McLatchey OAM, Lagardère Sports/EKS

·         Dr. Robert Kaspar, Assistant Professor for Sports Management, Seeburg Castle University

·         David Simon, President, Los Angeles Sports Council

A scene setter outlining the Dos and Don’ts in contract drafting will follow by Jeff Benz, CEDS, JAMS Mediator and Arbitrator and former General Counsel of the United States Olympic Committee. This will run alongside commentary from Francisco Lima, Director Governance & Institutional Affairs from the International Equestrian Federation, on special issues arising from the movement of horses. A panel session will follow and seek to identify the ten most important issues for any hosting agreement, including risk allocation between the event owner and host city. Commenting on his involvement in major event bids Benz said:

“I am pleased to participate in the LawAccord and CityAccord joint session at SportAccord on Host City Agreements.  Since my days as USOC general counsel through multiple event bids and hosting through today I have had the tremendous pleasure to work with a variety of parties in putting together the legal arrangements to conduct events in a variety of contexts. I am looking forward to sharing what I know about this subject and to deepening my knowledge learning from my fellow speakers and the audience. Putting together a solid event framework built on the basics business terms and legal agreements is the key to success in running events.”

This year’s LawAccord Keynote by Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General, Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), provides the essential annual update, a must attend for lawyers and sports administrators, where Reeb will share the most recent CAS cases and their impact on planning and decisions.

LawAccord Co-Chairs Stephen Townley, Active Rights Management (ARM) and Michael Lenard, ICAS, Vice President will announce the launch of the LawAccord global pro bono sports law firm of the year award 2019. This is supported by leading international academics Hayden Opie and Matthew Mitten as independent administrators for the award.

Host cities, as well as organisations and legal practices looking to attend LawAccord should register for SportAccord 2018 giving them access to the entire conference programme. As part of the Official Schedule, SportAccord will host well over 20 networking events, a 3-day Exhibition, and an extensive Conference programme to include: the Summit (Plenary), CityAccord, LawAccord, MediaAccord, HealthAccord; as well as workshops delivered by Sportcal and Yutang Sports.

NEW CONFERENCE PROGRAMME ‘HEALTHACCORD’ REVEALED FOR SPORTACCORD CONVENTION 2018 CO-CHAIRED BY LEADING SPORTS MEDICAL HEALTH EXPERTS

Date:
Friday, January 19, 2018

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – SportAccord Convention is delighted to reveal details for the inaugural conference programme: HealthAccord: The Power of Sport - The Power to Change, set to take place on the afternoon of Thursday 19 April 2018 at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre in Thailand. This builds on the success of the International Federation (IF) Forum 2016 where international sports federations gathered to discuss the power of sport to drive world health.

Recognised as two of the leading experts in sports medicine and health, Co-Chairs for the new HealthAccord conference programme: Dr. Margo Mountjoy, Chair, ASOIF Medical + Scientific Consultative Group, IOC Medical + Scientific Commission-Games Group FINA Bureau; and Prof. Fabio Pigozzi, President, FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) & Member of the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission – Medical and Scientific Group commented:

“HealthAccord is testament to Sport’s commitment to continued innovation for our athletes, as well as the significant role sport can play in cultures and communities around the world. They went on to say:

“This is a defining time for sport and SportAccord Convention continues to be a strong platform for addressing global issues amongst sport and industry leaders. HealthAccord gives us an opportunity to reflect on how our policies, partnerships and resources can best be put into use to support athletes at every level, as well as to share and identify practical ways to influence citizens to lead healthier lives – particularly in urban areas.”

Drawing on the knowledge and work of experts from global health programmes, HealthAccord will be of interest to international sports federations, cities, governing bodies, sports scientists, the medical fraternity, and industries who have a vested interest in sport – all of whom can register for SportAccord Convention. HealthAccord will include presentations, panel sessions and case studies with two overarching sessions focused on athletes and global citizens, respectively.

The first session: The Power of Sport will examine how to increase sports sponsorship and engage audiences through the application of ‘state of the art’ sport science and sport medicine, not only enabling an athlete to perform more spectacular feats that are ‘higher, stronger, faster’ to thrill global audiences, but will also enable athletes to remain active in sport for a longer duration. The session will identify the health principles underpinning the improvements in athlete performance and longevity in sport.

The second session: The Power to Change will look at the Olympic health legacy and lessons learnt, as well as implications for the future towards healthy, active sporting cities. Emerging evidence shows there is a general demise in the cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness of young individuals in western countries that seems to track the decrease in levels of physical activity. This decline in physical fitness also appears to be having a negative effect on sporting performance. There is the belief amongst some experts that the decline in physical fitness may impact negatively on sporting performance.

As half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas and this trend is destined to continue, this makes it likely that more of the world’s population will be affected by sedentary lifestyles and physical inactivity. There is an urgent need, therefore, for the Olympic movement and stakeholders in sport, to become social drivers and help to correct this mismatch. This session will examine what it takes to influence urban citizens worldwide, as well as the practical approaches that can be taken, so physical activity becomes part and parcel of their daily lives.

Further details can be found on the HealthAccord conference webpage. Registration and exhibition uptake for SAC2018 confirms strong interest for the next Convention taking place in Bangkok, Thailand from 15-20 April 2018, where delegates have numerous networking opportunities to connect with sporting leaders and decision-makers involved in the business of sport.

LAWACCORD AND CITYACCORD TO RUN JOINT WORKSHOP ON LEGAL RISKS AND BUSINESS IMPLICATIONS FOR HOST CITY AGREEMENTS FOR IFs, CITIES AND LAWYERS

Date:
Friday, January 19, 2018

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – SportAccord Convention is delighted to reveal an inaugural joint workshop between LawAccord and CityAccord focused on Host City Agreements during the Convention. International sports federations, cities, legal teams and stakeholders, will have the opportunity to hear from leading experts, as well as discuss the legal risks and business implications when it comes to hosting major global sports events.

Set to take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 April 2018 at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre, Steve Townley (LawAccord) and David Simon (CityAccord) who are co-hosting the workshop session said:

“This workshop collaboration is a first at SportAccord Convention and enables international sports federations and cities to work through Host City Agreements from every angle. Delegates will be able to examine the issues and challenges everyone is facing - including stakeholders – and in turn provide a sound basis for lawyers to meet client expectations too.

“Getting the hosting agreement right from the outset also means both international sports federations and cities are in a much better position to mitigate risks and disputes, and ultimately deliver a successful event.”

The workshop topics will address: areas of potential conflict; the most frequent disputes arising from hosting major events; risk responsibility, key drafting issues for lawyers; criminal law and anti-corruption regimes; mitigation against litigation risks; and the role of insurance and self-insurance.

Find further details of the LawAccord Conference Programme and SAC2018 including registration, on the website.

Commenting on the importance of this workshop, Craig McLatchey OAM, Lagardère Sports/EKS, a specialist consultancy supporting the technical delivery of major sporting events and who provide strategic guidance, event planning, production services and operational expertise said:

“It is great to be involved in the LawAccord and CityAccord joint workshop focused on Host City Agreements. I have had a deep involvement for many years in different capacities working for event owners, bidders and hosts – from the Olympic Games to other major global events.

“Understanding how both international sports federations and cities can identify and address risk within the framework of legal and business issues is a key step forward in the successful bidding and organising of a great event.”

Registration for #SAC2018 is open and delegate passes enable access to the entire conference programme including LawAccord and CityAccord. Commenting on the benefits for lawyers and legal teams who attend SportAccord Convention, hear what Alain Zahlan De Cayetti, Managing Partner of CVML (Dubai) and Arbitrator with TAS-CAS had to say.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS PREPARE TO LEAD THE WAY ON ‘SUSTAINABILITY’ & GIVE PLANET EARTH A SPORTING CHANCE

Date:
Monday, November 13, 2017

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Sir Ben Ainslie, four-time Olympic Gold Medallist & Team Principal, as well as Skipper of Britain’s America’s Cup Challenger, Land Rover BAR, led the way as an innovator of sustainability at this year’s 11th edition of the IF Forum which took place in Lausanne.

Given the significant and unstoppable changes being created by global warming as a result of environmental pollution and pollutants originating in human activity, speaker after speaker at this year’s IF Forum, many of whom represent international sports federations, shared case studies outlining the actions they are taking, and appealed to peers to take advantage of the unique opportunity in sport, to lead the way towards a sustainable agenda – the focus for this year’s conference programme.

The politics of climate change are shifting. Saving planet earth is more than just a fad and international sports federations can have impact. Delegates heard how new voices and new strategies are taking the lead – and how sport can shift attitudes towards achieving global sustainability. Speakers reinforced the view that sport is in a unique position to raise awareness on many levels, engage fans and global citizens everywhere, as well as empower young volunteers and change-makers, with sustainable initiatives and show how innovations can be impactful.

The urgency and poignancy of these messages were the subject of 24 presentations and case studies throughout the IF Forum, attended by 109 international sport federations and associate members, as well as 7 observer organisations.

Inger Andersen, Director General, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provided some thought-provoking and motivating insights during her session on sport and biodiversity and the role of the sporting community ending with a passionate plea, “Planet earth is the only place we know as home. If we don’t take action, there is no alternative home for us. Sport has a responsibility and an opportunity to do what it can for sustainability, to secure our future and make planet earth a better place for future generations.”

Lorenz Isler from Ikea Group gave a candid account during his session on the reactive to proactive ways of handling resources in industry:

“As a Sustainability Manager from the IKEA Group I found it very interesting to participate at the IF Forum 2017. Such gatherings are important to discuss challenges and exchange best practices so that we can learn from each other. Climate change and resource scarcity are real, and urgent actions are needed. I am thus positively surprised that this years’ IF Forum was fully dedicated to the topic of sustainability.”

Hosted by SportAccord Convention, delegates were welcomed by Thomas Bach, President, International Olympic Committee, and Philippe Leuba, State Councillor Department of Economy and Sport, Canton of Vaud.

Patrick Baumann, President of GAISF and SportAccord Convention gave the opening address. Summing up this year’s IF Forum President Baumann said:

“I would like to thank the many expert speakers for making this year’s IF Forum on Sustainability so illuminating, bringing clarity and insight to important issues and highlighting ways in which we can help make a difference.

“While we have a clear duty to preserve and promote sport for the next generation we have an even greater Duty of Care to our environment to ensure that the world we hold in trust is a great place to live and to play sport.

“This has been a fascinating, rewarding and useful Forum and I am sure delegates will go back to their Federations inspired and full of new ideas.”

In conclusion, Raffaele Chiulli, President of ARISF and UIM, and GAISF Vice President shared the following message in his Closing Remarks: “IFs are uniquely placed to promote the conservation on biodiversity and sustainability in sport. It is imperative that we also take a leading role in spreading our message and encouraging all our stakeholders to do more as well.”

The IF Forum conference programme was a collaboration between the IOC and the stakeholders GAISF, ASOIF, AIOWF, ARISF, AIMS, and Associate Members.

Panel sessions were led by David Eades, Anchor and Journalist, BBC World who served as Master of Ceremonies for the IF Forum 2017.

Official Partners included: JLT Specialty, Nielsen Sports, Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition; Legacy Partner Sport Event Denmark; and Host City Partners Lausanne and the Canton de Vaud.
