SIR MARTIN SORRELL, MICHAEL LYNAGH AND GARETH CAPON JOIN THIS YEAR’S SPEAKERS FOR SPORTACCORD CONVENTION IN LAUSANNE

Date:
Friday, April 15, 2016

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – SportAccord Convention is delighted and honoured to announce that Sir Martin Sorrell, the entrepreneurial founder and CEO of WPP; Michael Lynagh, Managing Director, EMEA, Dow Jones Corporate and Former Australian Rugby fly-half; and Gareth Capon, CEO of Grabyo, the global market leader in real-time social video, will take part in this year’s SportAccord Convention in Lausanne. These speakers, brought to delegates by Dow Jones Sports Intelligence, will share their account of the Mission of Sport, the overarching theme for the conference programme.

Sir Martin Sorrell will deliver the Keynote Address on Wednesday, 20 April 2016 ahead of the Digital Summit and Plenary Conference, outlining how the recent turmoil in sport has also presented its governing bodies with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reinvent themselves. Sir Martin said: “Sport has the ability to heal divisions, transcend differences and inspire generations. It is about belief, commitment and purpose, values that sports organisations should be building their brands around and promoting in society. From the challenges facing sport’s governing bodies, spring tremendous opportunities to rebuild, enhance reputations and adapt for the future.”

Rugby legend Michael Lynagh who has recently been appointed as Managing Director, EMEA for Dow Jones Corporate, will take part in this year’s Interview of the Day with David Eades, Journalist and Anchor, BBC World, during the Plenary Conference on Thursday, 21 April at 16.00 hours.

Gareth Capon, who brings more than 16 years’ experience in digital, mobile and television, and works with broadcasters and rights holders to maximise reach, engagement and video monetisation across social media and other digital platforms, will join panellists for the Round Table: Delivering to the Fans. This discussion focuses on what it takes to crack the code for deeper fan engagement and capitalise on the business of sport.

"The benefits that sports leagues, teams and players can gain in what is a constantly changing landscape between sport and social media is huge. Connecting fans with the latest action and providing viewable content anytime, anywhere, delivers unparalleled engagement with sports fans, unattainable through more traditional marketing approaches. Given the reach of social platforms, and the speed in which content is shared virally across networks, social media has created a new rule-book in attracting, and sustaining, a loyal global fan base. I’m looking forward to exploring how the rights holders can best deliver content to fans at SportAccord Convention.”

The Plenary Conference has established itself as the central platform for delegates to hear the latest on sport and sport business globally and is now in its 14th edition.

“Featuring a world-class speaker line-up for this year’s conference programme, we are delighted to welcome the return of Sir Martin Sorrell who was with us in Beijing and will deliver a unique perspective on the Mission of Sport, to listen to the legendary Michael Lynagh share his extraordinary story, as well as Gareth Capon, a media expert with a wealth of experience, to hear his points of view on the digital revolution which is up ending business models and creating huge new challenges and opportunities.” said Nis Hatt, Managing Director of SportAccord Convention.

We are always seeking to learn from colleagues around the world and we hope to see representatives from every continent taking part.”

Points for discussion could include: issues relating to the bid process, economic impact, legacy, governmental and private sector support, as well as other matters of concern. City-to-City is attended by representatives from regions, cities and countries, with delegates encouraged to share experiences and lessons learned.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events commented, “Major events make a vital contribution to the Scottish economy and, in recent years, staging some of the world’s most prestigious events, such as the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup, has brought about substantial benefits for the nation.” He went on to say, “Our progress has been greatly aided by knowledge sharing and discussing best practice with other leading event-hosting nations and I look forward to the further opportunity of doing just that during City-to-City and City Forum at the SportAccord Convention.”

The afternoon will begin with City Forum led by Don Schumacher, Executive Director of the National Association of Sports Commissions. The event will provide a series of seminars and panel sessions, addressing the needs and concerns of cities bidding for, as well as hosting, international sporting events.

Speaking of the importance of such an event, Ben Avison, Editorial and Conference Director of Host City for the Cavendish Group commented, “Host City is pleased to support City Forum at the SportAccord Convention. As a media provider, Host City always places cities at the centre of the major event hosting community and we welcome this excellent opportunity for cities to share experiences of hosting sports events.”

The first City Forum session will focus on The Current State of Affairs for cities presented by one of the Principal Media Partners, Sportcal. Delegates will receive an exclusive printed Summary covering some of the highlights from the studies made for the Global Sports Impact (GSI) Reports.

This year’s Event Watch focuses on the Tour de France Grand Départ providing a Netherlands case study on their decision to bid for the Tour start, as well as the results that followed.

The City Forum will also focus on Government and Non-Government Hosting Models with representatives from different countries, discussing the benefits and limitations of various models used by cities, bidding for and hosting sporting events. In the final session, delegates will be able to take part in a Group Project challenge focused on an event-bidding issue.

SPORTACCORD CONVENTION TO HOST ‘LAWACCORD’ IN LAUSANNE FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE OF SPORT AND THE LAW

Date:
Wednesday, March 16, 2016

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – SportAccord Convention is delighted to host this year’s LawAccord Conference with the support of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday, 18 April 2016 at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne. This year’s LawAccord conference programme will focus on the Future of Sport and the Law, as well as take a dispassionate view of some of the disputes following a year of conflict in sport.

Conference Co-Chair and Head of the LawAccord Conference Programme, Stephen Townley commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting LawAccord 2016 with the support of the Court of Arbitration for Sport as well as being able to extend a warm welcome to the recently appointed Director General of WADA, Oliver Niggli, who will take up his post officially in the near future. This year, LawAccord will focus on the needs of lawyers, sports administrators and International Federation officials, providing insights from a range of experts across the field, on the latest developments and concepts, as well as disputes that continue to challenge the world of sport.”

The initial Keynote will be given by Olivier Niggli from WADA, an organisation who play a pivotal role in preventing cheating in sport. The Keynote will provide an update on the implementation of the 2015 Code, WADA compliance programme and a roundup of the latest WADA investigations.

The first panel session involves an interactive workshop: What does sport look for and need from the legal industry? Sharing the ‘inside track’, delegates will learn what International Federations (IFs) and multisport events are looking for with plenty of opportunity for discussion and networking. This session is targeted at Sports lawyers and professionals who provide legal services to sport, (particularly International Federations), and those who wish to break into this industry.

The following Keynote: The latest from CAS will be given by Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General of CAS, providing delegates with the most recent jurisprudence and CAS rules. This will follow with a presentation of Olympic CAS case law, as well as an interactive discussion on how the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s Ad Hoc Division at the Rio 2016 Games, plans to tackle any disputes that may arise.

Most senior International Federation officials spend a portion of their lives mediating disputes within their organisations. Session 2: Solving sport disputes through mediation, examines the increasing role of mediation in sport. This session is aimed at Sports lawyers and professionals who need to understand the role and application of mediation within the SportAccord Movement, as well as what IFs and multisport events are looking to achieve in conflict management, and how mediation can play its part. The panel will also discuss when mediation is a real alternative to resolving conflicts within and outside a Federation and whether it works, how mediation can be incorporated into agreements, and where its shortfalls lie compared with other methods of legal recourse.
