Enthusiasm Surrounds Expanded Host City Options For SportAccord Convention 2015

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

With great excitement SportAccord Convention announced today that formal site visits have been completed at three of the possible host cities for the 13th annual edition in 2015. Strong interest has also been shown from multiple cities in Brazil – the host nation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Summer Games – to bring the Convention there for the first time and discussions are taking place between Brazil and SportAccord Convention.

At the same time comes reassurance from President Marius L. Vizer that the Convention will remain true to its core: the meeting for the IFs by the IFs. In addition there will be value-added propositions to give access to businesses of benefit to the IFs.

SportAccord Convention Executives have conducted technical inspections of locations in the three cities announced as possible hosts by President Vizer during the Convention last month in Belek/Antalya, Turkey: Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates); Durban (South Africa), and Sochi (Russia).

SportAccord Convention President Vizer has unveiled ambitious plans for the expansion of the scale of the Convention, with more delegates and more exhibitors from many new companies and organisations. Plans to invite top leaders in the sports industry, members of the National Federations, and the possibility of adding National Olympic Committees to the attendees, is progressing as part of the strategy to bring the annual event to an increasing number of the World Sports Family.

“Our site visits are assessments which take into account the increased size of the Convention as it moves forward,” said SportAccord Convention Managing Director, Nis Hatt. “We are excited to be in the privileged position of having so many cities interested in hosting our event and are looking forward to making an announcement very soon about where the 2015 Convention will be held.”

This year’s SportAccord Convention in Belek/Antalya, Turkey, attracted attendees representing 78 nationalities from around the world.

During the event, daily highlights were made available through EUROVISION’s WorldFeed Service and WorldLink on-demand platform. International broadcasters were among those accessing the SportAccord Convention 2014 video, as well as numerous news agencies including Reuters and SNTV. On average, 9 companies per day previewed content for broadcast and online use, with a high of 16 on the opening day of the Convention.

ISA showcases Stand-Up Paddle discipline at SportAccord Convention

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

In front of key Olympic family members, the International Surfing Association (ISA) today hosted a special live demonstration of Stand-Up Paddle (SUP), one of the sport’s most popular and fastest growing disciplines, at SportAccord Convention. As part of the world governing body’s plan to step up its aim for inclusion in the Olympic Games Sports Programme, the demonstration was carried out by Denmark’s 2013 World SUP Champion, Casper Steinfath. ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, was also present.

The ISA, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014, now has 82 Member Federations across all five continents including landlocked countries such as Switzerland, Austria and Hungary. The aim is to reach 100 Member Federations by the end of 2015.

An action sport that is intrinsically youthful, Surfing is a unique and modern blend of sport performance, style and culture. Of the 35 million people who surf across the globe, it is estimated that 14 million are aged 12-24.

The ISA also used the SportAccord Convention platform to promote new, innovative wave pool technology to Olympic leaders that will make Surfing more accessible to the Olympic Games and other multi-sport events, as well as illustrating the development and growing profile of SUP racing.

Speaking about the SUP demonstration and the future of Surfing, ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said:

“In its 50th year, the ISA continues to grow at a great pace and the fact we now have 82 Member Federations underlines our trajectory and direction. We are seeing huge growth in new markets such as Asia, Africa and South America and the booming popularity in these markets shows the universality of Surfing and SUP racing and its great appeal amongst young people.

“The essence of surfing lies in progression and innovation and it’s fantastic that we can now talk seriously about the affordable, state-of-the-art wave pool technology that is revolutionising our sport. The new technology will be capable of consistently delivering two metre high (6 feet), 120 metre long (390 feet), high performance waves. This is a real game changer for Surfing and it eliminates the main obstacle that has stood between our sport and the Olympic Games in the past.

“We are also very excited about the new spirit of change that the IOC is now embracing. With President Bach’s commitment to an open debate about the Olympic Sports Programme, we believe that this is the time for Surfing to step up its efforts for Olympic inclusion. We have just seen in Sochi how new action sports have refreshed and redefined the Winter Games and we firmly believe that Surfing can have a similar impact on the Summer Programme.”

2013 World SUP Champion, Casper Steinfath, said:

“It’s great to be here at SportAccord Convention to showcase SUP racing to the delegates. SUP and Surfing in general has really taken off in Europe and other non-traditional markets and we hope to continue that expansion to other new frontiers around the world.

“Surfing is a cool and dynamic sport and it’s very popular amongst young people so inclusion in the Olympic Games would bring a whole new, youthful audience for the Olympic Movement. Surfers around the world are committed to helping the sport become part of the Olympic Programme, and for our athletes, participating in the Olympic Games would be the pinnacle of their career.”

Repucom survey looks into future at SportAccord Convention 2014

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

Global sport can look ahead to growth and more fan engagement during the next five years, while its greatest challenge will be in making sport more appealing to young people, according to a major survey conducted by SportAccord Convention 2014 Sports Marketing Research Partner, Repucom, of delegates to the event. The results were revealed at the Convention today.

The fascinating survey gives an insight into the minds of the leaders of sport as Repucom polled more than 1500 participants of the 12th annual world sports summit about their views on the future. The results of the Repucom survey are based on a representative sample of delegates from international federations predominating, along with cities and event organisers also strongly represented in the replies. The survey was created in line with the “Sport’s New Frontier” theme of the SportAccord Convention 2014 conference this year.

In the Convention attendees’ point of view, disability sports (cited by 72% of respondents), women’s football (58%) and snowboarding (58%) were the genres mentioned most often as increasing in relevance during the next five years. Over 90% of those taking part in the survey said that the internet and mobile media would become stronger, while 86% of respondents agreed that the significance of women in sports would grow around the world.

Of the key challenges ahead, making sport more relevant to young people was cited by 94% of survey participants, while 91% said the main way to get young people to watch more sports is through more use of social, digital and mobile media by broadcasters.

“You can only have an influence on how sports events will be structured and marketed if you understand the sport business and how it is changing,” said Thomas Zimmermann, Global Director of Marketing and Communications, Repucom.

“We are proud to be the official sports marketing research partner to the SportAccord Convention and to have had the opportunity to conduct research amongst the congress delegates. The results of our survey will help draw a picture of the current status of the international sports federations’ business.

“We are hugely impressed by the quality of all the work Repucom has done in this survey,” said Nis Hatt, Managing Director, SportAccord Convention.

“It is gratifying to see so many of our delegates taking part. Their opinions on the future of sport will already enable us to add value to conference sessions right here in Belek as well as helping us in planning for the future.”
