City Priorities study unveiled at SportAccord Convention 2014

Date:
Tuesday, April 8, 2014

At SportAccord Convention 2014 here today, PwC presented its latest Thought Leadership publication on how the hosting of sporting events can contribute to regional and city development. The presentation took place at a special break-out session by PwC following the annual City to City Breakfast, which is a private meeting of city administrators from around the world who gather at the Convention each year.

The publication, entitled “It’s How You Play the Game: Matching a Region’s Priorities with the Right Mega – Or Not So Mega – Event,” was presented by PwC’s Cities and Local Government Sector Leader Hazem Galal and PwC’s Asia Pacific Head of PPP and Infrastructure Yumiko Noda. During the break out session, Hazem and Yumiko led a discussion among panellists David Simon of the Los Angeles Sports Council, Iain Edmondson of London & Partners and Rakel Liew of Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development on the role of sports events in city and regional development.

Hazem Galal, stated: “The appeal of marquee sports events such as the Olympic Games and football’s FIFA World Cup is undeniable, with cities the world over competing to host these high-profile events, undeterred by the substantial costs, extensive planning and inflexible timelines. However, not every city or region is ready or able to host a marquee mega-event. Some may not have the resources, the infrastructure, or the capacity. Instead, cities and regions are better served by assessing their long-term priorities for development and then bidding on the events that best correlate with those priorities.”

PwC’s new publication presents a framework for helping a city or region decide which event to host, based on key questions under the categories of overall readiness, venues, legacy, supporting infrastructure and intellectual capital. The publication then goes on to explore a number of key aspects on hosting sports event, including ways in which a city or region can maximize the impact of hosting events.

PwC’s insights on maximising the impact of sports events on city and regional development are illustrated within its mega-events publication in five case studies:

  1. 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Brazil
  2. 2014 Super Bowl in New York/New Jersey
  3. 2013 Universiade in Kazan
  4. 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco
  5. 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London.

SportAccord Convention 2014 Makes a Host City Impact in Turkey

Date:
Monday, April 7, 2014

Hosting SportAccord Convention 2014 will give a significant boost to the economy of host city Belek / Antalya in Turkey, according to research revealed today at the Convention by PwC, the global network of professional services firms.

PwC announced that holding SportAccord Convention, from April 6-11 at the Susesi Convention Centre, will boost the local economy by an estimated US$3.85 million and, perhaps more importantly, contribute to Antalya and Turkey’s achievement of its longer-term development goals. The 12th annual edition of the Convention will attract more than 1,500 delegates from all around the world, most of whom will stay in the city for the entire week.

PwC, a Gold Partner of the SportAccord Convention, estimates the direct economic impacts of the 2014 event at US$2.25 million in spending of non-resident participants in the event. Local companies benefit from this spending, which would not exist without the Convention. The largest share of direct spending will go to hotels and restaurants (83.6 percent). The transportation, social and cultural services, and retail industries are also expected to benefit from the direct impacts of SportAccord Convention.

Indirect economic impacts, as the initial spending triggers a ripple effect through the value chain of the local economy, are estimated at US$1.59 million.

PwC believes that SportAccord Convention will support the Turkish government’s 2023 Strategic Plan and the region of Antalya’s development plan through several intangible impacts:

• Encouraging business activity in areas related to the event by supporting development of social networks and intercultural contacts

• Attracting further major events to Antalya by demonstrating the region’s ability to host such events

• Promoting Antalya as an important global destination for sporting and cultural activities by hosting a significant number of delegates from all over the world and publicizing the event through global media

• Inspiring healthy lifestyles by promoting sports and the hosting of sports events.

Bob Gruman, Managing Partner of PwC’s Global Sports Mega-Events Centre of Excellence stated: “SportAccord Convention has become an important vehicle for popularizing sport and healthy lifestyles worldwide. Hosting 1500 delegates from global sports associations and media for a full week also provides an excellent opportunity to promote Antalya’s beautiful landscape and rich cultural heritage, while encouraging delegates and guests to visit the city again for personal or business reasons.”

“We are extremely pleased to know that our event will deliver real economic benefit to Belek and Antalya,” said SportAccord Convention Managing Director Nis Hatt. “To be validated by PwC’s authoritative research means a great deal to our organisation and to our stakeholders.”
