Run for a Reason

Friday, April 4, 2014

SportAccord, (the union both Olympic and non-Olympic International Federations) celebrates the first International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) with a commemorative run at 16:00 local time on Sunday 6 April during SportAccord Convention.

In late August 2013, the UN General Assembly declared the 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The adoption of this day signifies the increasing recognition by the United Nations of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.

To signal this important date and to join the world commemoration, SportAccord has decided to invite a local organisation, the Antalya Volunteers Association (Antalya Gönüllüleri Dernegi) to participate in the celebration, in recognition of their extraordinary social work within the Antalya community. All 50 Runners will be either children, which benefit from the Association’s activities, or volunteers who allow these to be implemented.

The Association was founded in 2010 in order to create a social approach with moral and material cooperation, solidarity and sharing, as reuniting the citizens of Antalya in a nature conscious, social and cultural environment. The association focuses in fields such as persons with disabilities, youth, environment, arts and culture and employment.

One of its Units’ motto is “We are the future”. It attends to the social needs of children and youngsters in order to improve their mental and physical health. It also provides advice centers, offers sports activities, organizes trainings sessions and supports youth through the Youth in Action projects.

Mr. Marius Vizer, SportAccord President stated that, “through years, this date shall become universal, a day dedicated to sport practices where everybody, from global to local, commits to promote social positive impact through sport, and sport will truly become a tool to build better society.”

FIBA to Shine a Light on Women's Basketball at SportAccord Convention 2014

Thursday, April 3, 2014

FIBA will be among the countless sports stakeholders taking part in SportAccord Convention 2014, the world's premier event at the service of sport.

This year's event will be held in Belek/Antalya, Turkey from Sunday 6 to Friday 11 April.

SportAccord Convention is dedicated to engaging rights holders, organising committees, cities, businesses and other organisations in the development of sport.

FIBA has been a faithful member of SportAccord Convention since its inception in 2003 and last year signed a two-year agreement as Bronze Partner of the event.

“Having been a partner of the Convention for 11 years, FIBA has been incredibly committed to the event, and its values,” said Nis Hatt, Managing Director, SportAccord Convention.

Each year it uses the Convention to highlight its latest, exciting initiatives, and I cannot wait to drop by their booth to see their promotion of Women’s Basketball.”

FIBA will have an exhibition stand where it can promote its numerous activities. Fittingly, with the FIBA World Championship for Women to be played in the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Ankara later in the year (27 September - 5 October), the world governing body for basketball will use its booth to promote women's basketball.

FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann said: "SportAccord Convention is one of the most important dates on FIBA's calendar and on the sports calendar in general.

"It is the perfect platform to bring sports' stakeholders together.

"After highlighting our 3x3 discipline at the Convention in 2012 and 2013 and getting excellent feedback, we are now looking forward to promoting women's basketball."
